The majority of car shows provide visitors with an opportunity to see cars of the future. Latest technology, concept designs and advances in motoring experienced are dangled before our eyes. We are tempted by the sheer delight of flowing lines, glorious gadgets and pristine paint work and leave with aspirations to own a dream vehicle of our own.

In the grounds of Blenheim Palace, a very different motoring event took place at the start of September. Rather than looking to the future, Salon Prive is a celebration of the most spectacular cars from the past. These super vehicles may not be equipped with futuristic features, but they are a showcase of the design excellence and stunning engineering that resulted in some of the world’s most renowned cars.

Salon Prive

With the aim of presenting automotive style and elegance and described as the U’s most exclusive automobile garden part, Salon Prive certainly delivers. This year the grounds of Winston Churchill’s Oxfordshire home were filled with collectors, buyers, owners and enthusiasts. Cameras were snapping and excited eyes were lit up by around 75 of the most magnificent and awe inspiring cars and motorbikes.

In addition to enjoying top class hospitality, the Oxfordshire countryside and some glorious weather at this truly superior automotive event, many visitors also took up the opportunity to ‘arrive and drive’. Morgan, Lexus, Ferrari and Tesla manufacturers participated in the test drive opportunity in the Palace grounds.

Visitors could also get involved by voting on their favourite vehicle at the event. A stunning Maserati A6 GCS Berlinetta won the People’s Choice Award. In addition, they had the unique experience of seeing a 50 celebration of the Lamborghini Miura, with 8 beautiful examples on show. There were plenty of prizes to be won by the cars that lined the avenue, such as the ‘Dream Machine’ class which was awarded to an original 1992 Ferrari F40.

The Overall Salon Prive Best of Show Winner was an immaculate 1956 Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa. Having last raced in 1960 this car spent many decades locked away in a barn in Iowa. It was tracked down, purchased and lovingly restored. The attention to detailing in restoration, along with the provenance and racing prestige, helped to secure the top prize for this desirable classic.

Classic Car Restoration

If you were fortunate enough to attend Salon Prive, it could have provided the inspiration to undertake your own classic car restoration project. Your budget might not stretch to an exclusive supercar, but more affordable classics are on the market and calling out to be brought back to their former glory. With considerable time, effort and attention to detail, you could be taking to the open road in a stylish vehicle from the past.

Finding a secure, clean and dry space for your classic car can be a challenge, but there is a solution just a stone’s throw away from Blenheim Palace.
